Here is a simple how to video related to finding diamonds.  I agree with this chap that he got lucky to find diamonds so fast, but in General, this is the way to do it.  Several mineshafts in different walls than with branches from the shafts Sinking is the way to find diamonds in a reliable way.  But make sure you don't get lost.

In order not to get lost, follow this tip: place all the torches on the wall on your right, not on the floor.  Then, if you get turned around somehow, you'll remember that going out of your base, all the torches on the walls on the right side, so if you want to go back, just make sure the torches on your left, and follow the trail back.
